Relief Effort

A huge thank you to some of my coworkers/friends who helped in donating medical supplies/medicines/needed toiletries/etc to the Haiti relief fund. I am so pleased to announce that we have 7 boxes packed and ready for shipping. Those 7 boxes totaled 127 lbs. I am excited and desperately hope that it will find its way down to those who need it most.

Misc

Just wanted to take a quick moment to share some of the recent pictures taken of Paloma to commemorate her 3rd birthday. Between scanning and editing, they didn't really turn out that well on blogger (that may have something to do with the fact that I'm not an expert at photo shop.) Oh well, at least you get the jist.

(Krista, if you are at all reading this - you will be glad to know that this is the "infamous" picture. Luckily you can't tell at all)

Hard to believe my baby is 3.

What kind of Mom are you meant to Be?

It is taking me awhile, but I am reading through a book entitled
"The Mom You're Meant to Be" by Cheri Fuller.
Oh how I love this book. It is putting a great perspective on parenting. I have ready a lot of good Christian parenting books but I would have to say that this is nearing the top of my list. I'd love to share a bit of it with you.
I'm not quite finished reading but I'll try and do another post when the book is complete.
Pick up a copy and enjoy...

Chapter 2 - Throw Away the Cookie Cutter
No parent ever trained up his child in the way he should go without making an effort to know that child -- Charles R. Swindoll
"The more I understood about our little ones emotional makeup, the more accepting I was of his emotions and grateful for his individuality." ~Cheri Fuller
This chapter is a great starter because it basically focuses on our role as parents. I think we have a tendency to compare one child with another one of your children or compare your child with your friends child. So often in conversation I hear, "well, my little baby walked at this age, how about yours?" or "my child knows her alphabet already, how about yours?" It is so important to remember that all children are unique. All children were created by the same Maker but with a very different makeup. I know I am extremely guilty of comparing my two kids but as I take a moment to step back and observe, I can appreciate each for their amazingly different qualities.

Chapter 3 - Don't Put Off Joy
Every day brings a chance for you to draw in a breath, kick off your shoes, and dance -- Oprah Winfrey

Another great chapter. Cheri talks about how often we as parents seem to actually put off joy. Meaning ~ we have a tendency to say to ourselves, I'll be happier when..... when the kids are potty trained, when the kids are sleeping through the night, when the kids are teenagers. But the focus is not when but now. Let's stop and enjoy the now. Although many of us may be in rather challenging stages (ie. meaning anyone with young children are stuck in challenging stage) let's enjoy this that the Lord gave us. So although we may be knee deep in diapers, bottles, sleepless nights, temper tantrums, lets enjoy the enjoyable in it. Each day brings something that can make us smile. I can guarantee at least for me, through the temper tantrums and biting, my kids will do something that makes me just want to giggle. Instead of focusing on negative, lets choose to focus on the positive ~ because like all things, it will pass - sometimes faster than we would like.

Chapter 4 - Never Be Too Smug
I definitely had to laugh after reading this chapter - why? Because I have found myself with my foot in my mouth on more than one occasion. Not to worry though, I am learning my lesson, especially when it comes to parenting.
"But the truth is, as moms, we must never be too smug.....How do you know you've gotten smug about your mothering? Here are two telltale clues: Critical thoughts creep into your mind when you see other less than-perfect kids & There's no room for improvement, new ideas, or advice from anyone else." Rather we should "walk in humility and gratefulness, no matter how well your kids behave, how high their grades are, or how fast their spiritual growth is progressing. This is biblical. And besides, if your kids are doing great at the moment (or turn out great in the end), it's more about God's grace than expert parenting skills." I guess there isn't a whole lot to add to that. It is true when you stop to think about.
How often have we as moms been critical of other mothers struggling with overtired toddlers in the grocery store or biting babies at daycare. Admit it, the thought has crossed your mind "not my child." I will admit is has crossed mine. But I have become much less judgemental and I think it all began - ummm - the day Mattea was brought home.
Realizing parenting is a challenging and downright hard job, why would we choose to be critical of one another instead of inspiring. Rather than blow out someone else's candle, lets help make it burn just a bit brighter.

Chapter 5 - People Are More Important Than Things
"A sparkling house is a fine thing if the children aren't robbed of their luster in keeping it that way." Marcelene Cox
Guilty as charged. I admit, in the back of my mind, I kind of think that I will be rewarded the gold heart in heaven for world's cleanest house. Or maybe it will be world's biggest perfectionist. Who knows. I'm not sure where these feelings come from but I definitely struggle in this area. Always wanting to be tidy, perfect, organized comes with a price. For example, when your children cover their ears the minute they see me head to the vacuum or they consistently yell "STOP" during the 6 times that I vacuum a day - there may be a problem. I'm certainly not saying that there I covet a clean house over an afternoon with my children. Or worse yet, I covet an item of any value over my children. I do not. But I do know that I have disciplined my kids when good intentions have gone wrong and something has either been broken, bent or ruined. I have passed on playtime so that I could obsessively clean or organize. I won't lie. For the most part, I have tried to do a really good job with filling my home with things of literally no value. Dave and I have decided that we won't purchase anything of any value until the kids are much older simply because we would never want to set them up for failure. We want them to be comfortable in their own home.
With that said, I think I broke Mattea's spirit the day I found out that she had colored on just about every page of her new sister's baby book. I was devastated. I was angry. Now, I just realize Paloma has a bit more character in her book than Mattea. Remember Heather, it is just a thing - Mattea is a person. Are you guilty of this. I can be but like many things in this book, I am working on it.

Ta Da!!!

After:
1) medicating 1 sick child
2) baking cocoa, craisin scones
3) washing 5 loads of laundry
4) pretending to be the Schwann man
5) playing barbies
6) taking a shower
7) cleaning up the kitchen
8) checking my email
9) paying bills
10) reading 101 books to my children
11) texting daddy to keep him informed of the day's events
12) planning an upcoming birthday party

and

13) twittering

I managed to make this.....

A tiramisu torte for my small group - the small group I didn't get to attend. A little sad about that but the fruits of my labor, I am not. Because I held a hand mixer for over 30 min in an attempt to "fluffy up" my frosting, I now have carpel tunnel. The whipping creme was against me today and never really "fluffied up" so that is why the sides are naked - but pretend they aren't. What do you think?

I have come to the realization that if I am going to be partaking in these cooking shanangans, I need a kitchenaid. 30+ min with a hand held mixer is ridiculous. Shout out if you agree!!!!

When Life Give You Lemons.....

You make cocoa craisin scones of course.

Or at least that is what the girls and I did this morning when I woke up to a sick 5 year old who was unable to go to school making an unhealthy, bitter mommy who was unable to go to the gym.

Oh well - New Year's resolution was to go with the flow. Actually, that was not my New Year's resolution because I simply do not make New Year's resolutions but I decided that if I was going to make a change for the better this year it would be to relax and enjoy the everyday ups and downs of parenting. So that is what I did, kind of.

Actually my newly turned 3 year old peanut allergy child begged me for muffins this morning and when I went to the pantry, opened the door and discovered I only had banana nut - I had to think fast. Uhhhh, pull out the cookbook (something I hadn't done since the first week I was married.) Luckily I had the ingredients to make scones and I had two willing helpers. Too bad I didn't have chocolate chips on hand (because I consumed the remainder of the bag a week or so ago during PMS). Instead, (remember rolling with the flow) I chose some leftover craisins from the pantry. Oh well, girls didn't seem to mind.

I had some enthusiastic helpers and some enthusiastic taste testers. I must say, they really didn't taste all that bad.

Thanks girls for a wonderful, fun filled, memory making morning. Love Ya!

My Sweet Sister

See this sweet, beautiful, charming face....
This is my oldest daughter Mattea ~ whom I now have the privilege of calling my sister. My Christian sister. My sweet baby girl prayed to God this afternoon in the car and asked Jesus (and God - she made sure to ask both) to come into her heart and forgive her for her sins. It was an amazing moment - one that was almost surreal.
Allow me to recollect the entire event....
As we were driving to our play date, Mattea was in the back singing some kids praise and worship music. One of the songs led to a conversation about Jesus living in your heart and always being with you wherever you go.
I asked Mattea if she would like to have Jesus come into her heart. She told me she already had - last night at prayer time with dad. But remembering David had never said anything to me about it, I asked Mattea if daddy helped her. She said no, "I did it very quietly." So I proceeded to ask, "Mattea would you like to do it out loud for all of us to hear - mommy can help you." Her response - yes. So at that moment, 12:10 am in to be exact, Miss Mattea sat in her car seat and thanked God for sending his son Jesus, prayed for Jesus to always be her Savior and friend, and asked for forgiveness of her sins. Paloma just sat in the backseat speechless. Of course I began to cry and text David.

Later that evening when David walked in the door, Mattea said "daddy did you get our text?"
Dave: Ummm, yes, I got lots of texts today. Which one are you talking about?
Mattea: The one about the prayer.
Dave: Oh yes, mommy told me you prayed. What did you pray about?
Mattea: I asked Jesus AND God to be in my heart.
Dave: That is wonderful Mattea.
Mattea: What did you text back?

Congratulations Mattea - may I see your smiling face in heaven someday. You are amazing.

Mattea Moments

This afternoon while I was in the shower, Mattea came into the bathroom and asked me for a baby brother. Knowing there wasn't a whole lot I could do for her, I asked her to talk to her father.

A few minutes later she ran upstairs and said "daddy said he wants a sister, but I want a brother!"

ME: "Well honey, I don't know what we are going to do about that."

Mattea so smoothly replied, "why don't you just ask God to send you down one from heaven?"

Do I have a great girl or what?

Date Day

On Wednesday while Mattea was in preschool, I promised Paloma her very own date day. She was excited as was I since I don't really have any one on one time with Paloma. Well - I do actually. But it always involves running errands, grocery shopping, going to the gym, etc.

So we dropped Mattea off and scooted our little bums down to the mall (which I haven't visited in like 2 years.) First stop - Build a Bear. I promised Paloma she could make her very own stuffed animal for her birthday and I was following through on my promise. After being completely overwhelmed with choices, she decided on a very cute little kitty.

She was so excited when she learned that she got to stuff her kitty, pick out a sound for her kitty (she chose the funny little giggles) and then pick out a heart for her kitty.

The fun didn't stop there. She got to bathe her kitty and clean her up and get her ready to be taken home. I then caved and let her pick out a cute pink birthday shirt for her little kitty - whose name is LOLO.

We completed our date day with a smoothie from Orange Julius and a browse around Borders Books. As we were leaving to pick up her sister, Paloma turned to me and said, "mama, I just don't want it to end." Melts my heart. Can't wait until our next date day.

The Great Bike Debacle

Paloma's birthday - as you all know since I blogged so much about it a couple of weeks ago - falls on Dec. 31st. It has taken some adjusting to having a holiday baby. Starting in Nov when 3 out of my 4 family members (sister, myself, and my dad) have their birthdays. Then we roll right on into Thanksgiving. Thinking you have a bit of time before Christmas, you take a break but realize if you hold your breath too long, it is Christmas Eve. And just as you are starting to get all the batteries put in the toys from Christmas - poof! it is Paloma's birthday. Yikes. For me it takes some serious organization.

This year though, I asked David to help me out in getting a present for Paloma - usually I do all of the shopping. I asked him if he would pick out her very first big girl bike. Well, with busy work schedules and crowded stores, it was the day before (actually night before) her birthday when he called me from the bike shop. "Should I get her the 12 inch or 16 inch?" Frazzled, I simply responded 16 inch - thinking we had a few months before summer approached. Now I know my little cutie is short, but I figured she'd grow into it.

So that night I dazzled it up with a new basket and some new handle bar decorations. I positioned it just right downstairs so it would be the first thing she saw when she woke up. And it was. She ran downstairs, ran over to it and gave it a hug. She was so excited. She couldn't wait to jump on. And I was excited for her. And then the big moment - she got on (with mom's help of course.) It was beyond big. She was so far from reaching the pedals it was ridiculous. The minute she found out she couldn't even begin to ride it she lost interest and I was crushed. Ugh, I had made the wrong choice. What's a mom to do?

Well, this mom then sent hubby out to pick up the pretty purple 12 inch that I was praying was still at the store. So after birthday breakfast, Dave and the girls packed up and headed back to the bike store. When she got home and realized she could reach the wheels on her shiny new purple bike, she was once again in heaven. And so was Mattea since it was almost as if she had acquired a new bike herself that day.

The girls rode around in circles in my kitchen all evening. I shared in their excitement and watched them ride around in circles until they were dizzy. So, Paloma not only got one new bike for her birthday but 2. Oh well, I'm sure both will get good use in the upcoming future.

BEAUTIFUL CHRISTIAN SISTER

'A woman's heart should be so hidden in Christ
that a man should have to seek Him first to find her.'

When I say that 'I am a Christian', I am not shouting that 'I am clean living.
I'm whispering 'I was lost, but now I'm found and forgiven.'

When I say 'I am a Christian' I don't speak of this with pride.
I'm confessing that I stumble and need Christ to be my guide.

When I say 'I am a Christian' I'm not trying to be strong.
I'm professing that I'm weak and need His strength to carry on.

When I say 'I am a Christian' I'm not bragging of success.
I'm admitting I have failed and need God to clean my mess.

When I say 'I am a Christian' I'm not claiming to be perfect.
My flaws are far too visible, but God believes I am worth it.

When I say 'I am a Christian' I still feel the sting of pain.
I have my share of heartaches, so I call upon His name.

When I say 'I am a Christian' I'm not holier than thou,
I'm just a simple sinner who received God's good grace, somehow!

Happy Birthday To You!!!!!

Happy Birthday sweet child of mine. What a magnificent day it is. I continue my posts on all things Paloma - why? Because she is the birthday girl! We have had a fun morning already and are now preparing to head off to the theater to watch "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs." She is so excited. Later it will be cake time, gift time, and just celebrate Paloma time.
For now, I'm continuing to stroll down memory lane. So here is Part 2.

Paloma's first few days were spent differently than Mattea's. First of all, they were noisier, more chaotic and were spent hanging out in a suitcase instead of mommy's arms. Yep - hyperbilirubinemia plagued my sweet girl until we were forced to put her under phototherapy - which she HATED! But at least her sweet dog Kody stood guard the entire time.

Oh and then came all the hugs, kisses, and help from big sister Mattea who was thrilled to finally have her home.

What a cute set of girls I have!

And of course, the sleepless nights started almost immediately. But what we would soon find out is that they never really stopped. Experiencing breathing problems and reflux from the beginning, both mommy and daddy would realize that once Paloma came home, sleep became NONEXISTENT!

But who needs sleep when you have these beautiful blue eyes staring at you. Starting off as not quite the "cutest" baby, Paloma has definitely evolved into a gorgeous little girl. We love you Paloma and are so proud of you. You keep us smiling and you keep us laughing. (You also have raised our blood pressure - but we aren't going to mention that in this blog post!) May you continue to fill our hearts and house with the joy and laughter that you have already provided. You are developing into such a sweet young lady. What a blessing you are.

God bless you baby girl!!!

Paloma - Part 1

It is that time....
You know, where as a mom, you look at the calendar and realize a very special birthday is coming up. It makes you both happy and sad to see that day circled in red on the calender. Makes you even a bit weepy. For me, it is that time.
My little baby, Miss Paloma Rae is turning 3 tomorrow.

It all started here back in May when we realized we were expecting our second child. I remember thinking to myself that morning when I woke, I am pregnant. Having had to work that day, I sat in curiosity all day until I was able to stop at the drug store and find out for sure. Yep, it was positive. I didn't need a test to tell me though, I already knew.

Both excited and overwhelmed with this pregnancy, I made sure to document just about everything - for in my head I had told myself this would be the last.

The day my baby was delivered was like a scene right out of a book. Literally, a snow storm had hit Albuquerque and the city was experiencing record snow fall. I think Dave and I were the only people on the road that morning. But we made it safely. A few hours after arriving, a few walks around the hospital, and many intense contractions, my sweet Paloma entered the world.

We had the honor of having one of my fellow nurses from the NICU attend her birth. Maybe I was overreacting or maybe it was just job hazard, but I was convinced I needed another nurse in the room to focus solely on my baby. Plus it was just comforting to know somebody was skilled enough to take care of her in case the need arose. And it did. Entering rather quickly, I think Paloma just didn't get the time she needed to squeeze out all the excess fluid and therefore she did have some minor respiratory issues.

Weighing in at only 6 lb 7 oz, she was small and sassy from the beginning. Nothing has changed.

Call me crazy but I chose to spend 2 days in the hospital - having nothing to do with the room service or the terrific menu, I knew that once I got home to a rambunctious 23 month old, I would literally have no one on one time with my newborn. So I chose to cuddle, sing, nurse, bond with my baby at the hospital. It wasn't all bad. I had a million visitors - many friends and coworkers who would stop up on lunch breaks. It was actually kind of nice.

Of course from the moment Mattea laid eyes on her, a bond formed. A bond that to this day has not been broken. Although they fight, bicker, bite and hit each other, they are truly in love with each other. Mattea is so protective of her little sister. I love the relationship that has formed and will do my best to nurture that in the years ahead.

That is the 1st part of my walk down memory lane. I loved getting out the photo albums and digging through pictures for these next couple of posts. Literally, it was as if it was just yesterday - but sadly enough, it wasn't. It has been 3 years. So with that, I will flip through my albums, re watch my birth video, and smile as I think of how wonderful (yet exhausting) these last three years of been. I wonder what the next 3 will be like?

Christmas Fondue

At our house, holidays are always a little bit "nontraditional." Because we don't have family to travel and see or big meals to prepare, our little family of four likes to be creative and make our own little holiday traditions.

This year we decided that we would fondue for Christmas. Sounding like a good idea at the time, Dave ran out to buy the pots. I ran out to buy the veggies, fruit, bread, cakes, and other ingredients.

Let's just say that although we were well intentioned, our fondue idea was a flop ~ at least to the adults. The two recipes we tried definitely need some tweaking. The kids on the other hand, didn't seem to notice the bitter tasting chocolate or the bland pot of cheese. They had a blast.

We had fun watching them have fun. And... they ate some vegetables.

So here is to holiday traditions, and here is to fondueing. May we try it again and be more successful next time than we were this time.

Happy Holidays!
